Welcome to the

Rath Psychiatry Research Lab

We are a collaborative research lab made up of students and faculty in the School of Medicine at The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston.

About the Lab

The Rath Lab is a student-led psychiatric research group supervised by Dr. Navin Oorjitham. Rath stands for "Rage Against the Hegemony" and represents our mission to engage in research that illuminates and dismantles hegemonic power structures within psychiatry that inhibit optimized care. Much, though not all, of our research involves interdisciplinary and cross-cultural perspectives. Our process is collaborative, driven by student interests, and focuses on developing well-rounded and independent researchers.

Meet Our

Researchers

We are a lab open to anyone - regardless of past experience. Our faculty advisor is Dr. Navin Oorjitham, Associate Professor at UTMB. The lab is run by a small group of student leadership (meet them below!), but anyone is welcome to join and gain leadership experience by coordinating their own projects!

Eating Disorders in Sexual and Gender Minority Students

This project explores trends in formal diagnosis, informal diagnosis, and eating disorder risk scores across sexual and gender minority (SGM) undergraduate students, including how intersectionality can impact this risk.

Mental Health Outcomes in Cancer Survivors

This project aims to identify risk factors for mental health outcomes (such as psychological distress and mental health service utilization) amongst cancer sufferers and survivors.

Food Selectivity Patterns in ARFID Patients

This project utilizes the MGH-proposed three dimensional model of ARFID symptomatology (perception, negative valence, arousal) to identify food selectivity patterns that arise in ARFID patients.
